Supporting writers to dare big dreams and to challenge the status quo.
MAKING TROUBLE, our writer support programme, is a commitment to champion and support Northern writers to create joyous and progressive trouble on Northern stages and in Northern communities.
We are determined to help create the same development opportunities in the North of England, and especially in our home city Hull, as there are elsewhere in the country. Without artist development opportunities in the North, we risk missing out on great art and brilliant nights out that is drawn from and reflects a truer representation of our whole society.
Much of this programme is based around moving writer support to the very heart of Silent Uproar, and how to embed it with inclusive and progressive practices. We strive to best offer genuine and meaningful support to artists and to ensure it properly represents the North of England.
Currently, MAKING TROUBLE is made up of three strands:
1) THE TROUBLEMAKERS - our gang of supported writers dreaming up shows for the future. 2) REBEL CARE PACKAGES- Little gifts to keep inspiring and rebellious writers going 3) OUT LOUD- a scratch night in Hull to showcase bold talent and fresh ideas
The Troublemakers- our first gang of supported writers.
We're delighted to announce THE TROUBLEMAKERS: Alison Carr, Olivia Hannah, Olivia Hirst, Nana-Kofi Kufuor, Maureen Lennon, and Joshua Val Martin.
Find out more about THE TROUBLEMAKERS here Each writer involved will receive a seed commission and range of support for over a year. This will range from regular artistic meetings, R&D's, workshops, and scratch nights.
Alex Mitchell, Artistic Director of Silent Uproar said: “Working with daring voices to inspire and excite younger crowds is at the very heart of what we do, from supporting writers to work with young people, to create new shows. This new programme will allow us to support more voices than ever before, build long-lasting relationships with inspiring writers to push our work to the next level, and dream up new shows for future theatregoers.
“We are ecstatic to be working with such an incredible group of artists from across the North. These writers will play a crucial role in shaping Silent Uproar’s future work, and our commitment to welcoming a younger, punkier, and funkier crowd to a night at the theatre. I cannot wait to start this journey with them
"Across our entire writer support programme, we are working with an incredible cohort of organisations including Arts Council England, Hull City Council, Hull Truck Theatre, Middle Child Theatre, Stephen Joseph Theatre (Scarborough), Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse Theatres, and Red Ladder. Their support has been vital in launching this new programme and we are moved by their encouragement, time, and guidance.
